I’m not usually into making New Year’s resolutions. To me, they tend to be more about what’s wrong with me; what I should be doing; what I could be doing better. They have a negative tone at times. But I’m going to turn the tables on that for 2021.
Instead of asking “What’s wrong with the mortgage industry?” or “Where do we fall short?”, LodeStar and I are going to ask “How can we make things better?” Just about everything and anything can be improved. And great things happen in little steps oftentimes. We’re going to ask—and answer—what little piece of the closing process we can make a little faster. We’ll ask how we can make things a little easier on both borrower and the professionals charged with getting them to closing. We’re going to address, one small step at a time, how we can help make the process more transparent—even if it’s in the tiniest way. We’re going to ask, “How can we help?”
You see, our industry showed yet again in 2020 that we’re capable of great things. We originated more mortgages than ever before—in the middle of a world pandemic! As a collective, the mortgage industry is capable of great things. And for the first time in years, I’m seeing decision-makers and professionals taking a look at the way we get things done and asking “How can I help?” instead of saying “That’s the way we’ve always done it.”
We’ll hear plenty in 2021 about grand designs; massive innovations and “end-to-end” solutions. We cheer them on. But we also believe that 2021 will be about lots of us—most of us, if not all of us—taking another look at the little things and asking, “How can we help make that a little better?”
Before you know it, we’ll be talking about great things! Happy New Year!
By the way, if you haven’t had a chance yet, please weigh in on our reader survey. We’ll be donating $10 for each response to Feeding America, and it takes literally less than three minutes!
